Gender, Diversity and Sustainability in Mathematics

der DMV

On this website you will find information on the projects and opportunities to get involved with our group division.

Fundamentally, the group division is concerned with the social responsibility of mathematicians. Mathematics is a key science and has an influence on social positions, career paths and social, ecological and economic development processes.

Intersection of the topics: Equal opportunities and gender equality are understood as sub-goals in the social sustainability process (see UN Agenda 2030)

DMV stands for equal opportunities and diversity and is against discrimination!

Resolution of the DMV Executive Committee of May 8, 2021

Our Goals

In the specialist group, mathematicians from different areas of mathematics aim to address topics relating to equal opportunities, diversity and sustainability.

There is a need for an empirical survey of the existing problems in this field, a research-based analysis of exclusionary mechanisms and a comprehensive discussion of countermeasures as well as their controlled, practically oriented implementation. It is important that the initiative comes from mathematics and is not left to gender studies alone.

Excerpt from the initiating letter from fall 2022

Specifically, the specialist group has the following goals:

  • Creation of a platform, and strengthening network(s) in research and teaching
  • Promotion and, if necessary, cross-linking of thematically related analytical research from the perspective of mathematics, if necessary through support of third-party funding applications
  • Improvement of data availability
  • Providing consultation & being a “voice”
  • Designing suitable measures from the perspective of mathematics in the discourse, and identifying possibilities for implementation
